If rowing isn’t for you, why not try coxing.
A cox is arguably the single most important person in the boat. Responsible for steering and coordinating the rowers, it’s their job to keep everyone safe, which is especially important given the ‘complex structure’ of the river Cam. Beyond steering, the cox is there to motivate the rowers, as well as coach them from inside the boat. During a race, the cox is often the making of a crew. With shouts of ‘DESTROY THEM’, ‘FINISH THEM’ and most importantly ‘LEGS’, the cox single handedly pushes a crew to the end. And don’t worry if you don’t have the loudest voice in the world. A cox is always equipped with their lifejacket and microphone, to ensure that everyone can hear everything the rowers are doing wrong.
A good cox can coach, motivate, steer and comment on the swans all at once – which is frankly too much for me to comprehend.
If you aren’t sure about rowing, but still want to be involved, maybe coxing is for you!
